Chapter 23: Heavy Metal
"So you want us to test our new mechs against your armor." "Yup." "You do know that these things will literally crush you if you get too close, right?" "Of course. I built two of them." "Well, it's your body." I grinned, closing the comms channel and activating my defenses. Zero and Infinity had arrived remarkably quickly and I hadn't had time to explain everything to Kelveros. Luckily I had made a manual for the Stiletto so he could learn it on the move. "Computer, activate weapon systems. Safety catches offline." [glow=red,2,300]Affirmative.[/glow] "Everyone ready?" "Of course." "Yeah. "What, we haven't started yet?" I rolled my eyes at Kelveros' comment, then noticed that his guns were trained on me and leapt out of the way as he fired. The resulting blast slammed me into the Ragnarok's leg, which immediately began to shake. I groaned, remembering that it was one of the two AI-controlled mechs, the other being Fire's Gundam. "Ooo... Suddenly I don't feel so good..." Infinity reached down and plucked me off. "You wanted to fight. Are you even going to try?" "Well, don't say I didn't warn you about what might happen." I ordered a warp, reappearing behind Kelveros and opening my grapple claw. "Heeere's Jonny!" "Wha..." Before he could finish the sentence I launched myself onto his mech, plunging the claw into a spot just above the legs. "Hacking program activate." My suit's visor immediately shone blue, changing to an image of symbols scrolling down a screen with four immobile ones at the bottom. "Match the symbols. Easy enough." I blinked at the first one I needed to place, as I had used an iris-recognition system to make the hacking processes easier. Ten seconds later, Kelveros swore as his cabin opened and his seat launched him onto a wall. An energy field sprang up around him, preventing him from returning to the mech. "That was far too quick. Zero, give him hell from me." "Copy that." His mech span, catching the Stiletto's missile launcher. I didn't realise that I needed to add thicker armor to that section before then, but it became apparent as soon as he did so. Every missile in the cannon detonated simultaneously, blowing me away. Straight into the path of Infinity's mech. "As they say on earth... Time for squishies!" I rolled aside just as the robot's foot slammed down, leaving a crater in the floor where I had been. "You'll pay for that one." I fired up my jumpjets, grabbing the left arm of the Gundam and flipping open a panel to insert the claw. This time, the intergave was different. "What? I've never seen this one before." The image before me was of two coloured streams of energy, one red and one blue. Small explosions were moving down the screen towards the bottom. I tentatively flicked my eyes sideways to move the outline of the red bar. It moved. Suddenly, a section of the stream changed to blue. "Oh, so I have to match the streams. Shouldn't be too hard." Suddenly, the mech emitted a loud beep and my vision returned to normal. "Hack failed? I guess it's on a time limit." After a few more tries (with Infinity trying to shake me off his arm in the process) I deactivated the mech. Kelveros had been controlling the Ragnarok and Infinity had been piloting the original Gundam, so only Zero remained. "Ready for a REAL battle?" "Only if you're not going to complain about me getting better armor." As I said it, a massive green-and-brown thing erupted out of the floor. The scorpion-esque creature landed with a loud Thud, then froze as a canopy opened. I leapt into it before Zero could open fire, then tapped a command into its console. "Zero, meet my strongest mech so far... the Juggernaut." The mech reared up, then raised its tail and opened its claws. "Computer, all weapons activate." The cannons mounted inside the claws buzzed into life, then immediately began firing blasts everywhere but at the Gundam. "You missed." "On the contrary, I wasn't aiming for you." The top of the tail creaked open, revealing a huge, double-barreled laser. "HeatLaser, lock on." "That sounds bad." "All mechs are vulnerable to overheating. This weapons is designed to exploit that weakness..." A large red crosshair appeared on Zero's mech. He looked down, cursed and fired his own weapons, smashing the Juggernaut's right claw. "Ack! Take evasive action!" The giant scorpion dived into the ground as Zero fired a second volley, barely missing me. "Stop hiding and fight!" "As you wish. Surfacing!" As I shot upwards, I had just enough time to see Zero's surprise before the laser fired. [glow=blue,2,300]WARNING. REACTOR HEAT CRITICAL. SHUTTING DOWN.[/glow] "You're just too good at this. Have you been practising?" "You could say that." I grinned, remembering the game I had based my robots on. It had been far easier than really fighting with them, but it had helped. As I left the mech, Zero met me. "We've just recieved news from a group of our spies that Dis Manibus has left for Allandria and taken his army with him. Apparently our mages have finished a spell to send you back, but we don't know where it will leave you." "I don't care, as long as it's not under ground or water." "Alright then... I suppose it'll be a while until we see you again." "Don't call me, I'll call you. So, where are these mages?"
It took us a few minutes to reach the lab where they had been working. As I stepped towards the portal, I sighed. I didn't know how events had been going in Allandria, but I assumed that if Dis Manibus was mobilising my side was losing. Time to go. After all, I don't want to keep Order waiting. "You can keep my mechs, by the way. I probably won't need them." I turned, waved and stepped backwards, allowing myself to fall. As I did so, I suddenly became conscious of something. My magic had replenished itself. I laughed. Time to fly.
As I watched the substance of the portal tunnel warping and twisting between dimensions, I caught a glimpse of a night sky. Earth's sky. A song entered my head and I grinned, allowing my armor to vibrate, causing it to act like a giant loudspeaker. "Hey! I'm looking up for my star girl..."
END CHAPTER and now, it's back to Allandria... I wonder what's happened in my absence...

15 as of my last birthday. to be honest, as a character I look at the whole thing like a videogame: anything which could be classed as a boss and is that weak either had several forms or isn't actually dead. next chapter up later.

chapter 24: Darkness Returns
Thud.
The noise as I landed echoed across the silent valley. "Oops. Next time I need to put the breaks on." A flash of light came from below me. Instinctively I switched on a cloaking spell. As it turned out, that was one of the best ideas I'd ever had. "Who goes there?" I swore under my breath, recognising the voice as Order's. While I had no idea what he was doing there, I knew I had to hide. There was nowhere. "What happened, sir?" "I heard something around here. Like a portal closing." "We'll split up and search for it. It could be more refugees." Refugees? Obviously something had happened after I left. I allowed myself to float upwards, away from the small group of mages which had assembled beneath me. "Those civilians are remarkably slippery. I expected to have them all rounded up by yesterday." "We have reports that a party of travellers was seen here earlier. They probably thought we'd keep going past here and they'd be safe." "Unlikely. They followed Chaos, remember. If they learned anything, they know that luck is no use against superior magic." My heart skipped a beat. The people from the Citadel had obviously had to run when Order had killed me, but I didn't think he would waste time trying to catch them. "At least we have their leaders. Do we have any news from Fire on the subject of Corios?" "His mercenary has returned earlier than expected. It seems Chaos is no longer there, if he was ever there in the first place." "Good. I shall return to the Citadel immediately... I have an interrogation or three to oversee." As he drew magic I launched a tracking spell onto his armor. He span, then disappeared. The warrior began to shout orders to the mages and I judged that now would be a good time to leave. However, as I did so I felt something resisting my movement. It was too late.
One of the mages glanced up as I cast a warp spell. I went nowhere, but my cover was blown: the man stared at me for a moment, then blasted me with a fireball. I swore, then dropped out of the sky, landing with a crash in the middle of the group. "Chaos mage. He musta been the one the boss heard." "Let's get him back to the city. He might be useful for bargaining." I groaned. That couldn't be a good thing. One of the mages brought his staff crashing down on my head. I lapsed into unconsciousness.
As I woke, I sent out an information spell to determine where I was. Order's prisons, came the answer. Sitting up, I saw another figure in the room with me. "What'd they get you for?" "Not being on their side. You?" "Refusing to follow orders. Boss told me to execute someone and I couldn't do it." I sighed. Even Order's own people were being locked up. "What sort of security do they use here?" "Nothing anyone short of the Lord of Chaos could get through. I heard the doors are made so only elementals can open them, so no elementals ever get put in here." I smiled. Finally, some good news. "They made a mistake trying to hold me here, then." The figure blinked at me, then burst into laughter. "You can't do anything, idiot. Chaos is dead, Wind and Water are being held somewhere else in the castle and Fire and Earth are being holed up by Order himself. Nobody can get us out of here." In response, I decided to test another spell I had come up with. My eyes changed to a shimmering purple. The warrior fell silent. "I am the Lord of Chaos. Now, do you want to get out of here or not?" He nodded. I stood up and crept over to the door, then examined it. No keyhole, just a featureless metal plate. I pressed my hand against it, then whispered. "Open." To my surprise, the door simply faded away. I stepped into the passageway outside. "Come on. We have a jailbreak to organise."
Half an hour later, everyone was free. There were roughly a hundred in the group, far too many to have fitted into the cells. I surveyed them carefully. Only thirty from my allies, the others Order or Fire warriors. Earth was the only element not present. "Does anyone know where the other Elementals are?" One of the Order mages raised her hand. I turned to her. "They're right under Order's throne room. I know the way, but we'll never get there without being seen." "I can fix that." I muttered a few words, then watched as the escapees disappeared one by one. Exclamations of surprise clamoured down the corridor, attracting the attention of a guard. I drew power, then slammed it into him. He flew backwards into a wall with a horribly loud CRUNCH. I turned away. I hoped I wouldn't need to do that again. There must be a way to win this pacifistically. I signalled to the others to follow the mage, then headed up the stairs.
It took a few minutes to reach the cells where the others were. I cast a quick sleeping spell on the guards, then opened the door. Sam and Tyler were talking quietly, apparently discussing an escape plan. A black-armoured figure was dozing in one corner of the cell. His face was unfamiliar but I recognised him instantly. Xenos. "You won't be needing that plan, by the way." Sam leapt up, forming a sword out of ice. Tyler simply snapped his fingers and I cursed as my cloaking dissipated. "Jon! You're alright!" "Of course. Any idea how to open this thing?" Sam grinned, then crushed his weapon into powder. "Order said nobody could open it. Not even him." "Oh? Stand back, then." I focussed, then released a colossal burst of power towards the door. It shattered instantly, shaking the floor and walls and dislodging dust from the ceiling. The impact threw me backwards and I felt something crack. "Ow." "Well... it worked, I'll give you that much. You hurt?" "Agh. I think I broke a rib." "Hold still." Sam strode over and placed a hand on my arm. Moments later, I felt a rush of warmth towards my chest. "Healing?" "I had to get used to doing it. They've been trying to torture us to find out what we knew about where you'd gone." I mentally consigned Order to an infinitely painful and drawn-out death. Normally I didn't like violence but this was different. "So, any idea what we do next?" "Earth is working with both sides. He's told us everything he can but he's also telling Order everything about us. He probably doesn't want to get on Order's bad side." "That implies that he has a good side too." I walked over to Xenos and poked him. "Hey. Get up." "Mmf... what? Who's that?" His eyes opened and I saw a flash of recognition. "So you did the eyes, eh? I changed mine too. Green and blue just don't fit with the post." "You don't seem surprised to see me... Celestius." "Looks like Zero finally told you. I wondered how long that would take." I felt a surge of magic, then watched as his armor changed. Black with white trim, and a golden circle like the one Zero wore emblazoned on the chest. "Let's get out of here."
