Has anyone here ever played G-Darius, WWII43/44, or...forgot the name...
They're all a bit like that, and usually involve 100+ items onscreen.
I love any games that resemble R-Type. The games you mentioned are definitely top-notch, and the Touhou games are similar except for the fact that it is seen from above rather than the side.www.simulationstyle.com/touhougames.htmlSince the game isn't risque or illegal (fan-made doujin, not licensed in North America, etc.) the link above leads to the Touhou Games.
1. First get Download Helper since the server there tends to cut off your download, and Download Helper automatically reattaches it. Helpful indeed, but use Internet Explorer for that.
2. Try the second or fifth link first. Both have patches in english for them (by the icon that has an E in the corner of it, means it has been translated.
The second one is "Perfect Cherry Blossom", the most well known game of Project Touhou. The fifth one is "Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil, the first one that game for PC and my personal favorite. To see if you like the game, I'd suggest going for the second link first (being the image link).
The controls are:
Z: Fires the regular bullet. Can be held.
X: Uses a bomb. Sort of like a desperation move that you can use 3 times per live, and every time you die it will restock.
Shift: The "Focus" button. Slows down your character for easier dodging (not the bullets, but the character) and condenses your shots so that they deal heavier damage to an opponent. Also shows your hitbox, or the red dot in the middle of your character. This hitbox is a few pixels big and wide, and it is where your character can be hit. If it hits the sprite, nothing will happen. You could say that the hitbox is your core.
No Shift on: Spread shot, advantage in some cases is that it attacks more monsters, but may make you easier to hit since you cannot see your hitbox/moving faster.

The red boxes marked as "
P" are power ups. Every so often when you collect a certain amount, you'll gain the next level of power. The maximum is 128. When you have a maximum of 128, if you move to the top of the screen, all points/power ups will come to you automatically (like a magnet). The big red "Ps" give 5, I believe.
Blue Boxes stand for points. Those who are aiming for a huge score rather than just completing the game (which you should do first) adore these.

Bosses have Spellcards, sort of like your bomb attack except tougher. Every boss has either a random attack (ie LOL RANDOM FIRE) or Pattern fire, with the latter appearing more than usual. These are tough as nails to dodge, and you'll see why this game is called bullet hell when you realize that occasionally, the whole screen is filled up with danmaku bullets and you only have one way of dodging.

The game requires a lot of twitchy moves and quick reactions, so if you think you're fast enough then play it.
I personally think it excels as a game quite well, so post screenshots with Print Screen and paste it in Paint and show some pictures when you play. For myself, I'm trying to go for a one continue clear with Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil.
Have fun. Keke.

Note: Touhou is known for its great music, I adore it.
