My last five logins (over the span of about two years) have shown that there is really nothing new in AQ aside from that portals thing... No idea what that is. I'm not going to bother with checking it out, either.

Nothing new? Are you mad? The last two year have been the best so far. The releases have been incredible.... And they are about to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
To list a few epic updates:
Revamped Nemesis, Shadow (now Twilight at the highest tier), OverLord (reign), Shadowslayer and Nighthunter (Vampireslayer), Wizard and many more classes and Mastercraft sets to be revamped on top of the new ones coming out.
Reward Sweep: It is now considerably easier to level up and actually get the gold for stuff (never was a problem with me, it felt more like a challenge than grinding to me, but it was considerably more difficult for some it seems). Back to the lunchbreak style this game had before levels became quite a bit about grinding.
Mastercrafts sets: Mastercrafts sets are the successors to Ubers (in other words, Uber is only used as a reference to the original mastercrafts sets). There is about one big one that comes out a year, but there are many more individual Mastercraft items that come out over the course of the year. Mastercrafts are neat in the sense that for an extra gold cost... They have added power which can come in many different forms. Triggers, Status effects (Paralysis, Fear, Freeze, Petrify (earth freeze basically), Celerity (chance of an extra turn), you name it... And new ones come out all the time) and all sorts of neat abilities.
The portal thing, Black Seraphim, is one of many things... One of which is basically going to one of two planets where there is a number of quests, rewards and lets you gain reputation with the people of those planets. It also serves as an addition to the House System enabling you to send out armies (yes, no jest, armies) to fight enemies in wars (which comes with a good dose of experience and gold for doing so).
Best I cut it there... I have not even begun on the wars and storylines (those are epic as well) and if I do... This post will become far too long.
tl;dr I suggest you do check it out. You shall not be disappointed. There is tons of news stuff with weekly updates.

I suppose Seratim probably meant the general formula of AQ is still the same as it was, which is true. A lot of us hoped it would go in the direction Dragonfable or AQ Worlds did, back then.
Adventure Quest is honestly probably just as good as when we left, honestly. But 'just as good' doesn't quite keep people interested.
After all, It's been almost ten years for me, at least. That's a long time to be playing the same game.

It got stale for me because I couldn't level up and progress my character in any meaningful way for a long time. The reward sweep has changed that entirely and that's the main reason I'm playing again and bringing the site back. The game is way better now, it won't take me months to level up once and then not be able to afford any of the new gear I can buy.

Okay. Comment rescinded. There's a lot I have to catch up on. The nostalgia is probably just a huge factor for me... Although I'm kind of pissed they changed the names to King's/Eventide's vs. Reign and Shadow... that was sort of unnecessary
